Austin is gearing up for plenty of fall festivals and events, including several hosted and sponsored by local animal welfare organizations. Starting Saturday, there will be plenty of opportunities to get out, have some fun and support the animal rescue community. Here are just a few of the fun events coming up:
Austin Pittie Limits
The Austin Animal Center in alliance with several animal welfare groups kick start Pit Bull Awareness month in October by speaking up about the benefits of adopting pit bull-type dogs and debunking the myths and negative images associated with the breed. Live music, adoptions, information sessions and training demonstrations are on the schedule Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Austin Animal Center, 7201 Levander Loop, Austin, TX 78721. Free.
Paws in the Park
Local radio station Majic 95.5 will host this festival dedicated to our furry friends on Sept. 27 from 11 a.m-3 p.m. Listeners and their pets are invited to enjoy pet-friendly activities, on-site grooming, a shopping bazaar, live music and adoptions at Centennial Plaza, 301 W. Bagdad Ave, Round Rock, TX 78664. Free.
Puppy Mill Awareness Day
Several states throughout the country (including Texas) join forces to bring awareness to the cruel realities of the puppy mill industry on Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This event will feature live music, food, drink, vendors and training demonstrations. Local rescue groups will also be in attendance at Scholtz Garden, 1607 San Jacinto Blvd., Austin, TX 78701. Free.
There will also be a Silent & Live Art Auction and VIP Reception held on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Shoal Crossing Event Center, 8611 N. MoPac, Austin, TX 78759.

In its 12th year, the Pet Fest will be held at the San Marcos Plaza Park, 401 E. Hopkins St., San Marcos, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11. The family-friendly festival includes a Dog Jog 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run (which begins at 8 a.m.), vendor booths, live entertainment, K-9 Police Demo, training demo, agility demo, pet contests, pet rescues, kids’ activities, a silent auction and more.
Bring your pet (costumes are encouraged) or come meet and greet the homeless pets from local shelters and rescue organizations. Admission is free, but it is requested that attendees bring a donation of dry pet food. The event benefits PALS mission to provide low-cost spay/neuter services to dogs and cats.
Animal Lovers of Austin, Inc. will present the 2014 fundraiser on Oct. 19 from Noon – 4 p.m. at Triangle Park, 4660 Triangle Ave., Austin, TX 78751. Attendees will be able to bid on unique doghouses constructed by Austin architects, designers and builders as well as participate in a dog costume contest and shop at local vendor booths. Dogs will get an opportunity to visit a puppy “SPAW”. Free.
Tricks & Treats Gala
Join Austin Pets Alive! for a Halloween-themed gala on Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. at the Shoal Crossing Event Center, 8611 N. MoPac, Austin, TX 78759. The evening will include a silent auction, specialty cocktails, buffet, live entertainment, trick-or-treating for attendees and pets and more.
Texas Sized Pittie Pride Prom Parade and Festival
Thousands of costume-clad dogs and owners will take to the streets and march down Congress Avenue to Republic Square Park to raise awareness against the misunderstandings of pit bull type dogs on Oct. 26 from Noon – 4 p.m. This year, the Love-A-Bull Pittie Prom King and Queen will lead the parade. The Parade will begin at the Austin American-Statesman parking lot, 305 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78704, and end at Republic Square Park, 422 Guadalupe Street, Austin, TX 78701, in Downtown Austin. The festival will entail auctions, giveaways, local merchants, a pittie kissing booth and more. Free.
The Love-A-Bull team will also be hosting a VIP Prom Night on Oct. 25 from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. at the Palm Door on Sixth, 508 E. 6th Street, Austin, TX 78701. Tickets include cocktails, food, prom photo and dance party. A costume contest and silent auction will be held.
