Austin Pets Alive!

broccoliBroccoli

Pit Bull Terrier, female, 7 years, 1 month

If you’re looking for a calm, affectionate friend, look no further than Ms. Broccoli. This girl would love to relax on a soft spot in your home, or maybe spend some time in the evening lounging on the cool grass while you tend to your yard. She is quite timid around new people, but will still happily accept a nice scratch under the chin. Lots of action rattles her nerves a bit, too, so she’d prefer to stay away from busy farmer’s markets and the like. Broccoli previously lived with children and was wonderful with them, though she’d like to be the only dog in your home.

mercuryMercury

Boxer/Pit Bull Terrier, male, 2 years

Mercury is a playful, energetic adolescent who would be great for a family who likes to get their exercise. He will make a great hiking or running partner. But his favorite activity is chasing tennis balls. Mercury loves nothing better than a nice game of fetch. So far Mercury seems to behave inconsistently around other dogs. We’re working to give him some socialization. He might be able to share a home with a well-matched mate, but he wouldn’t mind being the only dog in the home either. His energy level might be too much for smaller children, but a home with active older kids who would love to engage with him would be great.

diabloDiablo

Labrador Retriever, male, 10 years, 11 months

Diablo is a sweet older dog that has maybe had a rough time in this past. Diablo is an easy-going soul at heart, who’s just trying not to rock the boat. He aims to please and listens to his foster family. He loves pets on the head but is a little uncomfortable with too much hugging and snuggling.  Diablo can be good with other dogs, but needs to be introduced carefully.  Slowly but surely, Diablo seems to be warming up to the idea of being a family dog. With some time, patience, and a steady routine, we think he can blossom into his full Lab-ness and be the loyal and loving companion he was meant to be.

maddieMaddie

Domestic Shorthair, female, 1 years, 1 month

They say that cats are curious creatures, and Maddie is one feline who lives up to the stereotype! An inquisitive kitty, she can often be found perched on a windowsill observing the outside world or waiting to greet visitors at the door. Once you’ve walked through that door, it won’t take long for Maddie to win you over like she’s charmed our staff and volunteers! She can be a bit reserved with strangers, but warms up quickly and lets her affectionate nature show. Before you know it, her little white paws will jump into your lap and she’ll curl up to be cuddled.

Introducing Ceasar! Ceaser is the funnest guy around, who loves all! Cats and humans beware, for Ceasar become your new BFF! Ceasar loves some good play time and would love a forever buddy to pal around with.

FriscoFrisco

Terrier/Mix, male, 1 year

Hi, I’m Frisco! I’m a reserved guy looking for a patient, loving home. I’m still learning how to be comfortable around people, but I’m getting better everyday! I bet we could bond over a Netflix marathon and some yummy treats! Will you show me how to love?

Little DoeLittle Doe

Chihuahua, Short Coat/Purebred, female, 6 years

Meet Little Doe! You won’t be able to resist this sweet girl! Little Doe has been with us for the past year. She was part of the backyard breeding rescue we took part in. All the dogs from that rescue have found their home but Little Doe still waits for hers. She is very friendly but is still getting use to humans. She eagerly will go up to you for a sniff and maybe even a quick kiss to the hand but is still a little shy. She loves to be held, though, and finds peace and comfort from the one who is holding her. She would do great in a quiet environment that will give her time to adjust to her new surroundings.

Kal-p4pKal

Terrier, Pit Bull/Mix, male, 2 years

Hi! My name is Kal and I am a sweet, lovable boy who just wants to climb in your lap and hang out. Need a running partner? Let’s go! Need a cuddle buddy? I’m your boy! Come check me out and I’ll be best your new best friend! I get along with all people I have met here, including respectful older children. I would prefer to be the only dog in your heart.

Thundering Paws Animal Sanctuary

Tootsie1Tootsie

1 year, Female, Domestic Shorthair

Hi, I’m Tootsie. I’m a sweet, gentle girl who is a little shy with people. I’m still learning to trust but once I’m on your lap I will purr for you and enjoy being petted. I love snoozing in a hammock and watching through the window as birds come to the feeder. Like most kittens I love to play, and I have a good time romping around with my sister. I’ll do best in a fairly quiet home, and I wouldn’t mind having another kitty to play with. If you’re looking for a pair of kittens, please consider me and one of my siblings.

Stretch 2-14-15Stretch

1 year, Male, Domestic Shorthair

Because my sisters, brothers and I were homeless — without regular meals and human love, I admit I’m a little shy at first. But now I’ve learned how to purr like a little engine and stretch my arms out towards you when you walk in the room. I like other cats when they play with me and I’m learning about the dog that lives at my foster home. I’d do well in a home with adults or with a family with older kids. At first, I like to explore my surroundings room by room so I feel safe. Once that happens, I relax and feel at home. Maybe that could be your home?

Man’s best friend seeking canine companion in Austin

Sample screenshot provided by BarkHappy.
Sample screenshot provided by BarkHappy.

This dog-friendly city is about to get friendlier.

As of Thursday, new app BarkHappy is live in the Austin area. Using their opposable thumbs, humans can create profiles for their furry friends (using their most flattering photo, naturally). The app will then find and suggest canines compatible with your own to message or add to your pack for potential meet-ups. Or for instant play dates, users can locate human-dog pairs already nearby.

BarkHappy, created by an Austin-based company, also hopes be a resource for finding dog friendly restaurants, stores, hotels, bars, and other locations around town.

The location-based meet-up and search app for dogs and their human companions is available for iOS now and will be ready for Android soon. So iPhone owners, how many more days will you deprive your dog of his or her own social meetup profile? You never know who may send you a wag!

Pets of the Week: July 20, 2015

Austin Animal Center

wilburWilbur (ID A699338)

1 year old Labrador mix, Neutered male

Wilbur is a classic Labrador! He knows sit, loves to go for walks, rides well in the car, likes to play fetch, loves water and keeps his kennel very clean. He has recovered from a broken leg that AAC completed the surgery on, and now is ready to go!

Dawn & DeltaDelta & Dawn  (IDs A705909 & A705010)

Outgoing and very curious these sisters would be a great adoption together! Please be sure you are ready to adopt, it is a lifetime commitment!

Austin Pets Alive!

vegaVega

7 years, 7 months, female, Pit Bull Terrier

Vega is truly one of the snuggliest, happiest, most joyful girls you’ll meet. She really NEVER stops smiling and is a big, mellow, lovable couch potato. Calm, quiet, and polite around the house this girl REALLY bonds with her people. She needs to be the only pet in the home, though she’s very social and loves human house guests. She’s a smart girl and very eager to please, making her ideal for training and teaching new commands.

clariceClarice

9 years, 9 months, female, Rat Terrier

Are you an experienced dog owner in a child-free, pet-free home? If so, read on. Clarice is a handful, we won’t pretend she’s not, but in the right environment she is a delightful dog. She is tolerant of the resident cats, until they get in her way. She doesn’t really know how to interact with dogs. A few very tolerant dogs have been able to coexist with Clarice by either ignoring her or putting her in her place. Clarice is not exactly a social butterfly. She loves being around her human, whoever that human is at the time, but is not very accepting of visitors.

tuggTugg

3 years, 5 months, male, American Staffordshire Terrier

Tugg is the perfect name for this cutie, since he loves for you to tug on toys with him! Will you be his new tug buddy? This energetic pup wants anyone and everyone to play with him. He loves to run and will play fetch all day. He adores his toys and shows them off to his people by proudly prancing around with them in his mouth. He has excellent leash skills and is a great walking partner. This boy would do best in an adult-only home. If there are other dogs in the home where Tugg would be living, a meet and greet would be the best way to find out if everyone gets along.

Miss KittyMiss Kitty

9 years, 10 months, female, Domestic Shorthair

Miss Kitty was very afraid when she came into her foster home. She did not want to be touched at all. She hid in cabinets, ate very little, and only when she was alone. The owner that surrendered her to the shelter said she was fearful, aloof, and quiet. This is the exact opposite of the cat we know today. She is an extreme lap cat, she is vocal, friendly, and she comes right up to rub on new people. Miss Kitty does not get along with other cats. She is not aggressive, but she definitely does not want other cats in her space. We have never seen her around dogs.
trevorTrevor

14 years, 5 months, male, Domestic Shorthair

Trevor is an older gentleman of stocky build and unique coloring. He has a simultaneously goofy and regal nature. Got a rambunctious kitten who’s always in everyone’s business? Trevor doesn’t care. Got a needy dog who wags and wiggles all over the house? Trevor doesn’t pay any mind. He just wants to hang out. Trevor is on the stockier side as far as cats go and has arthritis. Trevor has arthritis and certain actions are pretty difficult for him. Sometimes will pee in his sleep because it’s difficult for him to get up; Trevor will need a pretty understanding, cat-savvy home with people who aren’t strangers to cleaning up after them.

OliviaOlivia

2 years, female, Domestic Longhair/Mix

DukeDuke

4 years, male, Chihuahua, Short Coat/Mix

Meet Duke! He is the Duke of Cuddles! Duke loves spending quality time snuggling up with his human. He is the the ultimate lap dog! But don’t let that fool you, he loves being outdoors, running and playing! He gets along great with other dogs and would love another canine companion but as long as he has a safe and loving home, he is happy. Won’t you be the one to give that to him?

ChipperChipper

2 years, male, Terrier/Mix

Hi, I’m Chipper! I’m a hip hound looking for a pad to call my own! I’m still getting used to being around all these new people, so don’t let first impressions worry you. I’m still learning how awesome people really can be. (Yummy treats sure help!) I would sure love to be your loyal Fido!

OliveOlive

1 year, female, Spaniel, English Cocker/Retriever, Labrador

Meet Olive! Olive is a loveable girl that’s a lot of fun to be around! She’s spunky and spry and is ready for a home that will love her to pieces! She enjoys the company of other canines and does great with kiddos! She is an all around great girl that is ready to find her family!

Pets of the Week: July 13, 2015

Austin Animal Center

RoscoeRoscoe (ID A669582)

3-year-old Pit Bull mix, male

Roscoe is a ball-fetching champion who loves active games and he LOVES to go swimming and will readily leap into the water! He knows “sit,” and “down” and “drop it,” and seems to be housetrained. He’s been at the shelter for over a year and really needs to find his own active forever family! Although he’ll pass other dogs on the trail without batting an eye, he is fairly uncertain about close contact with other dogs so would be best as an only dog.

MajorMajor (ID A627376)

5-year-old Staffordshire mix, male

Big handsome Major is a staff favorite and we want to tell you all the reasons why!! He knows sit, walks great on his leash, seems housetrained, and loves people! We call him the ‘cuddle bug’! He needs to be an inside dog and be with his family!

LillyLilly (ID A699173)

12-week-old Domestic Short hair, female

Lilly arrived at AAC with a broken tail and in pain, our veterinarians decided it was best for her if the ‘broken’ part of the tail was surgically removed. Now Lilly needs a foster home for 1 month so she can heal!

ZeldaZelda (ID A697235)

3-year-old Harrier hound mix, female

We love Zelda at AAC, she is certainly a staff favorite for very good reason. When she arrived at AAC she was very underweight and had an infected wound on her side. Even while she was in pain she was always happy to see us. Zelda has suffered trauma to her hind leg and in fact her face is a bit sideway too, but we think she has a distinct and unique look that fits her loving personality!

MaxMax (ID A699725)

4-month-old Jack Russell terrier mix, male

Max is a very special pup that was hit by a car, literally crushed and very lucky to be alive now. Our veterinarians completed an incredible surgery and he is well on his way to recovery. He will need time to heal and his new owner should be able to care for him for the remainder of his life, and always keep your pets safely contained.

Austin Pets Alive!

StevieStevie

Australian Cattle Dog Pointer, male, 1 year, 11 months

Check out this great looking young dog. Stevie is just starting to mature into an adult and has loads of potential to become a great pet. He can be a bit tentative when meeting someone new, but once he’s warmed up he is all about affection. Stevie didn’t appear to have had much practice on a leash before he came to our shelter. But he is learning quickly and is fairly easy to walk. He’s also learning to sit, stay and down on command. He’s a people-pleaser and anxious to learn his manners so he can fit in well at your home. He is medium energy and really enjoys walks. He would do best in a home where he is the only dog, and should be in a home with teenagers or older.

BanjoBanjo

Bulldog, American Terrier, Staffordshire Bull, male, 9 years, 3 months

Banjo is a lover of people, cuddling, swimming, and sticks or tennis balls. Toss him one across the yard and let him entertain you with his proud prancing, happy wiggling, and earnest chewing. He is a sweet companion who is content to lie next to you while you go about your business, always making sure that at least a small part of his body is touching you. Banjo is very willing to learn, too! In fact, he has been working on his Canine Good Citizen skills with APA staff and volunteers.  Banjo does not like cats and would likely do best as the only dog in your home.

TigerwoodsTigerwoods

Terrier, Pit Bull Mix, male, 2 years, 6 months

Affectionately referred to as “T-Woo” by staff and volunteers, this handsome pup is more cat than dog. He loves to rub against people (and furniture), and he’s far more interested in attention than toys. After a walk or two around the block, he’ll snuggle up contentedly at your side. T-Woo is a smart boy who knows and continues to improve on several commands: sit, down, place, crate, recall, drop, shake (both paws!), and leave it. He is house and crate trained. He’s a dog who needs boundaries, but will thrive once he knows what’s expected of him and what will get him praise (and treats!). His disklikes include: cats, other dogs, rain, and being left alone. But he loves: people, kongs, his crate, playing tug, and bubbles.

Central Texas SPCA

Cortez2Cortez

German Shepherd, male, 1 year

Here’s Cortez! Cortez is a shepherd mix, but no one knows where he got those long legs from! Still young, Cortez has some growing to do, and many situations are new to him, so he’ll need a good friend to show him the way. Cortez seems to get along well with other dogs, and has that shepherdy-sweetness that makes his breed such a wonderful family friend. Cortez would do well with an active family and a good sized yard. Shepherds tend to roam, though, so supervision is a must. Cortez has a big future ahead of him, and you should be part of it! No cats please!

Annie1Annie

Domestic Short Hair, female, 10 months

Annie is a very distinctive young kitty with a very unique face that points out her Egyptian heritage. She is not furless, but rather very lightly covered in short hair in a lovely orange and cream coloring. Annie has a gravelly sort of meow that sounds more like a hiss, but this kitty is full of hugs and purrs! Quiet and loving, this kitty will make a perfect apartment companion. Come down and meet Miss Annie today!

DodgerDodger

Border Collie and Anatolian Shepherd, male, 2 years

Dodger, aka the “kissing bandit”, is the resident love bug of the shelter. Any chance he gets, Dodger is kissing and loving on everyone. He’s a smart boy who already knows how to sit on command and we’re sure that he’ll learn other commands in a jiffy! He’s got a gorgeous, soft, longer coat that’s great to pet. With dewclaws on his back feet, we reckon that he’s got some Anatolian shepherd mixed with Border collie. Dodger is an absolute sweetheart and we’re sure he’d be happy to be your new best friend!

ToroToro

Domestic Short Hair, male, 2 months

Toro is a feisty young man with a lot of love to give. He loves to play and his favorite activity is hunting his mouse toys. Toro loves to cuddle, and his purr can be heard from miles away when he’s snuggling with his favorite person. At just 8 weeks old, he’s still got a ton of kitten energy and sweetness. You should definitely stop by and play, he’d be happy to meet you!

simba4Simba

Domestic Medium Hair, male, 1 year

Simba is a fun little guy who loves people. Any chance he gets, he’s climbing all over everyone in hopes of getting attention. His long haired orange tabby coat is reminiscent of his namesake, and he takes the same hakuna matata attitude towards life. Although Simba is super sweet with people, he’s not a big fan of dogs. We think he’d do best in a single cat home with a loving family. Come by and see him today, we’re sure you’ll be won over by his charm!

Texas Humane Heroes

Miss PrissMiss Priss

Domestic Shorthair/Mix, female, 1 year

Hi! I’m Miss Priss! You’ll have to excuse my shyness…I’m getting used to living indoors! I’m a sweet girl and am ready for a home so that I can share my love. Once I have a chance to adjust to my surroundings, I look forward to being your new friend!

Cattywhompas2Cattywhompas

Domestic Shorthair/Mix, female, 2 years

Introducing Cattywhompas! Cattywhompas is the name and silly is the game. She loves to explore and will be the queen bee of the house. She enjoys playing games and is an active girl. She likes to cuddle but only after she decides she’s had enough playtime.

DukeDuke

Chihuahua, Short Coat/Mix, male, 4 years

Meet Duke! He is the Duke of Cuddles! Duke loves spending quality time snuggling up with his human. He is the the ultimate lap dog! Hey, I’m Alex! I’m a sensitive pup looking for a patient, loving home! I’m still learning how to connect with humans, you guys are just so big and make so many noises! But I promise to be the best dog I can be. Will you be the one to teach me?

GusGus

Basset Hound/Mix, male, 4 years

Meet Gus! Gus is a happy little boy that is ready for a home of his own! He enjoys playing with his people and even other dogs! He would make a perfect fit into any home! As long as they aren’t too active, his little legs can only go so fast!

I love snoozing in a hammock and watching through the window as birds come to the feeder. Like most kittens I love to play, and I have a good time romping around with my sister.

Austin Animal Center seeks dog walkers to brighten shelter dogs’ days

From the City of Austin:

dog walkAustin Animal Center is asking the community to be part of ensuring animals receive needed exercise as it seeks volunteers to help with walking dogs.

The AAC will host two dog-walking information sessions for possible volunteers to walk medium to large dogs from 7 to 8 p.m. July 15 and from 9 to 10 a.m. Aug. 8 at 7201 Levander Loop location.

Because of the high volume of dogs in the shelter, more help is needed to ensure dogs get out for bathroom breaks and to stretch their legs throughout the day.

As Austin’s only open-intake shelter, the City relies on rescue partners including Austin Pets Alive! and Austin Humane Society to take many of the 18,000 animals — about 50 animals a day — that come into the shelter.

Even with partner assistance, the shelter is often at capacity, meaning more than 200 dogs need to be walked multiple times per day.

As the largest no-kill city in the United States, staff and volunteers at Austin Animal Center give animals as long as they need to find their forever homes. Some animals wait many months to get adopted, living in kennels, before a family comes to take them home.

The walks are key to keeping them happy and healthy so they can be ready to meet potential adopters.

“We should look at the shelter as a summer camp where you learn a new song, do a craft, exercise, go for a walk, and then you go home,” said Chief Animal Services Officer Tawny Hammond. “And the idea is to create this type of environment and this same model at the shelter because these animals are going home.

“Becoming a dog-walking volunteer at the shelter is easy and you’ll get to exercise while knowing you are the brightest moment in a shelter dog’s day.” Hammond said. “With more than  18,000 animals coming into the center annually and an average of 48 animals coming in per day, staff and volunteers cannot do this alone. We know the community loves animals and will be part of the solution.”

To sign up to become a volunteer dog walker, visit www.austinanimalcenter.org.

Volunteer dog walkers will attend a brief orientation and training session prior to beginning to walk dogs. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and volunteer manual.

Contact the shelter today and you could be walking dogs next week.

City shelter pet adoptions are available at the Austin Animal Center, 7201 Levander Loop, from 11 to 7 p.m. daily and the City’s overflow kennels at Town Lake Animal Center, 1156 W. Cesar Chavez St., from 11:30 to 7 p.m. daily.

For more information visit www.austinanimalcenter.org or check Facebook for daily pet updates.

Lulu loves to spend time with her foster family, play with her toys, and patiently wait for her foster parents to pet her! Lulu does have one special need – when she came to the shelter, she had bladder stones that had to be surgically removed shortly after her arrival. She has fully recovered, but she will need to be on a prescription diet for the rest of her life. It’s not expensive – about $15-20 a month, but this also means that she’ll need regular vet care so that her prescription remains up to date.

Austin Pets Alive!

Nacho2Nacho

Domestic Shorthair Mix, male, 3 months

Looking for a lap kitten that purrs like nobody’s business? Then sweet Nacho may be just the cat you’ve been hoping to find! He loves, loves, loves to curl up in laps and turn his purr motor up to full throttle! When he isn’t cuddling or napping he is gleefully active…he loves to stalk and take down his mouse toys or swat a jingle ball back and forth for a good game of catch!

fluffyFluffy

Domestic Longhair Mix, male, 9 years, 4 months

Fluffy is a double-super-sweet kitty who wants to love you and please you! He is patient and easy-going, and loves to sit next to you while you read or work on the computer. He prefers being held and cuddled over sitting in your lap. Fluffy’s back legs don’t always work the way they are supposed to, so he needs help expressing his urine; APA! can provide guidance and training in how to do this.

GuinessGuinness

Catahoula Leopard dog Mix, male, 4 years, 4 months

Guinness is a handsome, loving, gentle soul. He was fortunate to live in a foster home for a while, away from the noisy shelter environment that is a little stressful for him. In the home, he stayed close to his foster mom, snuggling on the couch, giving kisses and laying at her feet. He is learning his manners and his new human should continue his training. This smart boy has adapted to crate training and appears house trained. He has shown some resource guarding, so a home without children will be best for him.

NakiaNakia

Basset Hound Bulldog, American, male, 2 years, 11 months

To say that Nakia never met a stranger is an understatement. This sweet boy is excited to meet any new human, even climbing into the lap of a complete stranger to cover her with kisses. Nakia is full of confidence. Out for a walk on the trail, he climbed into a maintenance worker’s golf cart to give him kisses, too. Nakia needs to be the only dog in your home, but believe us – he’s all you’ll need! And he’s been known to resource guard, so he’ll do best in an adult-only home or one with older teens.

LouieLouie

Terrier, Pit Bull Mix, male, 3 years, 1 month

Louie is a sweet soul who hasn’t been given a chance to be a dog just yet. We don’t know much about his last situation, but he has scars and other signs that it wasn’t a loving home. So things like toys, his leash, his crate, the whole idea of walks…these are all very new to him. But he’s been taking it all in stride. Despite what may have happened in his past, Louie is very trusting and loving with his foster human. If you show him a little kindness, he will be happy to call you friend. He is very affectionate and low key, and if his humans are around, he will always want to be where they are.

DaffodilDaffodil

Domestic Medium Hair/Mix, female, 1 year

Meet Daffodil! She is as pretty as the flower and has a sweet personality to go along with it! She likes spending her time with people and enjoys the company of other kitties. She would fit nicely into a home that is as laid back as she is! Come meet her today, you will be going home with the prettiest girl of all!

Little Doe (2)Little Doe

White HorseWhite Horse

Terrier/mix, male, 2 years

White Horse here! I’m a bit of a wallflower (walldog?) still figuring all this Human Stuff out. Everyday, I’m learning how wonderful people can really be! The yummy treats sure help. I’m looking for a quiet, patient home to help me grow into the best, confident dog I can be.

DukeDuke

Chihuahua, Short Coat/Mix, male, 4 years

Meet Duke! He is the Duke of Cuddles! Duke loves spending quality time snuggling up with his human. He is the the ultimate lap dog! But don’t let that fool you, he loves being outdoors, running and playing! He gets along great with other dogs and would love another canine companion but as long as he has a safe and loving home, he is happy.

Piper1

Piper

Mix, female, 1 year

Hi, my name is Piper and I am looking for my forever home. I was abandoned as a younger puppy and had a hard time because no one wanted me. But I’m happy now that I have a foster home and I am excited about finding a home where I’ll belong for good! I am a very spirited pooch and I love to run and play! I am great on a leash and we can have fun walks and jogs together. I have met some other dogs and children and I think I would love to play with them.

Austin Animal Center hosting ‘Adoptathon,’ urging pet safety for July Fourth weekend

From the City of Austin:

fireworksThe Austin Animal Center, 7201 Levander Loop, will be open this Fourth of July holiday weekend with a “Super Shelter Adoptathon” special.

All ready-to-go dogs and cats will have a special adoption fee of $25, with the fee waived for those adopting animals 7 years or older.  All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and go home with a collar, tag and microchip.

The Center will be open regular hours of 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, July 3, and Sunday, July 5. The holiday hours on July 4 will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Every Fourth of July, Austin Animal Center sees a spike in the number of lost pets due to runaways that are frightened by the noise from fireworks.

Because the animal shelter is operating at critical capacity, it is extremely important to have the pet properly tagged so the animal will not be at risk. The City is asking if a lost dog or cat is found that the person finding the pet keep him/her safely contained, call 3-1-1 to report the lost animal, and house the animal a few days before turning it in to the shelter.

Additionally, pet owners should make sure that pets are properly contained on the Fourth of July. The safest way to ensure that your animal doesn’t run off is to bring the pet inside during the celebration.

The Austin Animal Center offers free I.D. tags and microchips to all pet owners in Austin and Travis County to help keep pets safe and out of the animal shelter system.
If a pet is lost, owners should call 3-1-1 right away and check the Animal Center’s website and Twitter @austinanimals for up-to-date listings of all stray animals who have entered the shelter. Or download Finding Rover a free mobile app for finding lost dogs in real-time at Findingrover.com.
Tips to locate a lost pet include placing fliers in neighborhoods and posting information on social media outlets and on lost pet websites such as www.lostfoundpets.us
The Austin Animal Center is also asking for donations of dog chews to keep the dogs in the shelter busy and distracted during fireworks. The loud noise can cause anxiety for pets in the shelter. Dog chews can be dropped off at 7201 Levander Loop.
