Austin Humane Society holding ‘Kitten Shower’ donation and foster care drive

KittenShowerRegistrySpring has sprung and kitten season has begun! Join us on the front porch of the Austin Humane Society for a Kitten Shower on Saturday, April 18th from 11am to noon. This is a family-friendly event and donation drive for Austin’s homeless newborn kittens. These bottle babies need supplies such as formula, heating pads, and tender loving care in order to survive. Your donations help kittens get nursed to optimal health.

“With the arrival of kitten season in early spring, animal shelters are flooded with un-weaned kittens that rely on the care of generous and selfless Bottle Baby Kitten Fosters in order to survive,” says AHS Foster Care Coordinator Jamie Hunt.  “With such a huge influx of kittens, we rely on donations to help save the lives of orphaned kittens and give them the chance to live a full and happy life.”

Help us fulfill our bottle babies’ needs by bringing in items from our registry below, or donate your time by emailing our Foster Care Coordinator about becoming a kitten foster volunteer. Newborn Kitten Foster Orientation will be held immediately following the Shower in the AHS Auditorium.

Holiday Help for Shelter Pets

PugHome for the Holidays Austin Dog RescueThe holidays bring out the giving spirit in us and there are plenty of ways to spread holiday cheer and extend that spirit to Austin animal rescues this season. Whether it is donating a little time, space or money, small efforts make a big difference for many animal welfare organizations.

Holiday Fostering – Most pet rescues with a foster program need fosters for their pet foster families who are planning on going out of town during the holidays. Temporary foster assignments usually last a few days to a week. Contact your favorite group’s foster coordinator for more information.

Adoption – Giving a shelter pet a loving, forever home during the holidays is a great gift not only for the pet, but for the adopter as well. Some organizations, such as the Austin Humane Society, provide adoption vouchers that you can give as a gift to someone looking to adopt. Adoption counselors at your local shelters are great resources for the details.

Wish Lists – Don’t forget our furry friends when you are out holiday shopping. Most shelters and rescues have their own lists of much needed items such as food, beds, blankets, collars, toys, towels and treats. Most wish lists are posted on an organization’s website. Check online for specific needs.

Seasonal Fundraisers – Many rescues host several fundraisers throughout the end of the year that benefit their groups. Whether it’s buying a raffle ticket, going to a happy hour, getting a picture of your dog with Santa taken or having your gifts wrapped, the proceeds go toward organizations’ missions and efforts. Rescues usually post their event calendars on their websites and social media pages.
