The Austin Humane Society (AHS) and the Austin Animal Center (AAC) are hoping to find homes for over 325 pets this weekend during the ASPCA Mega Match-A-Thon nationwide event sponsored by Subaru.
Austin is one of more than 30 locations taking part in the special event, which will be going on October 18-19.
There will be over 200 puppies and kittens available for adoption at the AHS, and over 250 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens ready for adoption at the AAC.
“It takes a community to help Austin’s homeless pets,” said Chief Animal Services Officer Abigail Smith in a City of Austin news release. “These types of special events and partnerships is key to saving lives in Austin.”
All adoption fees will be waived, and both shelters will also cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, leash, collar, ID tag, microchipping and vaccinations for each adopted pet. In addition to free adoptions, the AHS will also have free giveaways, including Science Diet pet food.
Long lines are expected at both shelters, so potential adopters are encouraged to come early.
“Every single person who comes out to this event makes a difference,” said Frances Jonon, Executive Director of AHS in a news release. “Our goal as an organization is to save the lives of these animals in need. This adoption even helps us all come together to be a part of the solution.”
The Austin Humane Society (124 W. Anderson Lane) will be open from noon to 7 p.m. on both days, and the Austin Animal Center (7201 Levander Loop) from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The adoption special will also apply to all pets at the overflow kennels at Town Lake Animal Center (1156 W. Cesar Chavez St.), open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
Both shelters will also be at the The Thinkery at Mueller Park this weekend from 10am-6pm to help boost adoptions.
